Our task is to show the way to discipline. Discipline is born when the child concentrates his attention on some object that attracts him and provides him not only with a useful exercise but with a control of error.

-Maria Montessori

Mathematics Materials

The Bead Frame forms the bridge to abstraction for the decimal system exercises of addition and subtraction.
The Binomial Cube is a concrete representation of the algebraic formula (a+b)3. The factors of the equation are represented by the cubes and prisms. The primary Montessori child explores the Binomial Cube as a sensorial activity of visual discrimination of color and form. This indirect preparation for algebra prepares the child for the elementary Montessori class.
The Small Bead Chains prepare the child for multiplication through "skip counting". Color-coded plastic arrows with multiples printed on them help the child identify and label the chains.
