It is with a great sense of pride that we share the next chapter in Staunton Montessori School’s growth and development. This August, SMS will relocate to the beautiful former Statler Brothers Complex at 501 Thornrose Avenue in Staunton for the 26-27 school year and beyond.
This historic campus is larger, meticulously maintained, and offers direct access to Gypsy Hill Park and downtown, creating incredible new opportunities for our programs.
Our move is a major step forward in our plan to become a Model Montessori School by 2035.
In Montessori philosophy, the “prepared environment” acts as a “second teacher,” supporting a child’s natural development. While our staff has made thoughtful use of our current space, its limitations have prevented the program from reaching its full potential. Relocating ensures a safe, stable, and high-quality environment that truly reflects our mission and values.

Capacity for 10+ Classrooms: Ample space allows our program to grow and mature to serve the community’s long-term needs.
A “Pipeline” for Success: This expansion allows us to open a third Primary classroom immediately, creating the enrollment foundation required to eventually reopen a sustainable Adolescent program.
Nature & “Going Out”: The campus directly abuts Gypsy Hill Park for nature education and is close to downtown for elementary “going out” expeditions.
Specialized Spaces: The site also includes an aftercare cottage, a gym, a stage, and a library.

A move this big takes a village! There are several ways to get involved:
Spread the Word: Share your SMS story with friends and neighbors looking for a vibrant learning community.
Join our Leadership: We are seeking strategic collaborators for our Board of Trustees with backgrounds in finance, law, or fundraising.
Lend a Hand: If you are interested in helping with the physical move, please contact us
